"The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism: ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power."

— Franklin Roosevelt

Content:

In order to provide material that is comprehensive and accessible, the Roosevelt Rx Publication will be divided into several sections. About half of the publication will be innovative student policy proposals and about half of the publication will provide context for these policies and discuss the larger issues of implementation. This journal will be published by the Roosevelt Institution and will consist of about 60 pages on half-sheet paper (like the 25 Ideas publication). These pages will roughly be divided as follows:

  1. Introductory Executive Summary – 2 pages
    1. Perhaps an introductory remark by a prominent health policy authority?
  2. History of health policy reform from Roosevelt to the present - 10  pages
    1. 2-3 short essays about different time periods (i.e Roosevelt, LBJ, and Clinton) or one long piece by a strong writer
  3. Key facts about health care and student stories about health for young adults from different campuses across the country – 6  pages
    1. Presented in a dynamic way (more figures and less text)
  4. Analyses of current presidential health care plans - 6  pages
    1. Analysis of the current political candidates
  5. Roosevelt Policy briefs about specific state and federal solutions - 30 pages
    1. 15 two page briefs on three different focus areas (cost, disparities, and access, particularly as they relate to young adults)
  6. Framing and communication of health policy issues – 6 pages
    1. 3 two-page essays about different framing issues (i.e. cost-effectiveness, fear-based advertisements, and human rights) or one really strong essay
Leadership Positions
To be successful, the Roosevelt Rx publication will require a team effort of many talented, dedicated people. For a description of leadership roles, click here. If you are interested in taking a leadership role, email robert.nelb (at) yale.edu with a short statement of interest by Friday, March 4th. You are strongly encouraged to take a leadership role, but you do not need to be an editor in order to publish a policy paper in the publication.
